Social Networking Award 2006

Social Networking Award 2006

This is apparently the first time that Mashable, a site dedicated to all things on social networking is presenting an award for the most popular social network for 2006.

As with any contest, there will be certain rules to follow and if you are intending to vote for your favorite social network, then be sure to read the rules.

What you CAN do: You can ask your site’s users to vote for you. And if you’re a user of a particular site and you want that site to win, you can also share the buttons and links with your friends. If you’re a devoted MySpace user, for instance, you could send out a bulletin.

What you CAN’T do: Any individual can’t vote more than once. It’s smart to enter a genuine email address, since we’re logging IP addresses and locations - if we see any suspicious voting, we’ll send a friendly email to check that the vote is bona fide. If any company is found to be cheating, they’ll be excluded from the competition.

What Your Vote Means: You’re voting for the People’s Choice winner. As mentioned previously, we will have a second list of winners called the Judge’s Choice, made by an expert panel. It’s possible that the People’s Choice will be won by the sites who get their users to vote for them, but that’s ok - an active, passionate user base is a good sign.

There will be 12 categories in this award, and nominations are still open as of now except those that fall under the “Large Scale” category.

That list of nominees include:

1. MySpace
2. Friendster
3. Multiply
4. hi5
5. Piczo
6. Tagworld
7. Bebo
8. Tagged
9. Orkut
10. Xanga
11. Facebook
12. Facebox
13. LinkedIn
14. Vox

Unfortunately, social networks that were launched in 2006 are not eligible to participate and StumbleUpon is one of them.

Update: StumbleUpon is in the running for favorite social bookmarking site under the “Social News & Social Bookmarking” category.
